Progressive policies are popular. Let me say that again: Progressive policies are popular. I spoke with @JonFavs about my new book and how Democrats win: by saying what we’re fighting for and delivering results. crooked.com/podcast/republic…

My daddy couldn’t work for a while after his heart attack. The bills piled up. One day, I walked into my parents’ bedroom. My mother’s face was red and puffy. A black dress was laid out over the bedspread—the dress that only came out for weddings, graduations, and funerals.

"We are not going to lose this house,” she kept saying. She’d never worked outside the home. She was terrified. But she knew what she had to do. She put on that dress, walked down the street to Sears, and got a minimum wage job that saved our home and our family.

I’m thinking about my mother today. I’m thinking about all of the mothers who reach down, dig deep, and do what they need to do to take care of their families. And I’m thinking about all of the ways our government can do more—so much more—to have those mothers’ backs. #MothersDay

For me, books are a way to have a conversation about the issues that matter most. I wrote “Persist” about how policy decisions touch people’s lives—and how people can shape those decisions by being in the fight. I hope you’ll consider giving it a read: static.macmillan.com/static/…

The numbers are clear: When people are weighed down by student loan debt, they’re less likely to start families. Or buy cars. Or buy homes. Or start small businesses. We need to #CancelStudentDebt to let people build a future and jumpstart our whole economy.

I’ve got a bill with @AlexPadilla4CA, @Castro4Congress, and @TedLieu to create a pathway to citizenship for essential workers who are undocumented. These workers risked their lives to keep our country going, and they shouldn’t have to live in fear of deportation.

Advocates like Alice Wong (@DisVisibility) have led the way in making sure presidential candidates can no longer ignore disability rights as a decisive, national issue. Check out @wendyluwrites’ profile of Wong here: huffp.st/u34mMEV

Someone who’s got more than $50 million in the bank can afford to pay two cents on their 50-millionth-and-first dollar, and every dollar after that—plus a few more pennies if they become a billionaire. It is time for a #WealthTax in America.

I talked with @EzraKlein about my new book and the policies we need to create jobs and level the playing field for working families. At the top of my list is investing in quality, affordable child care and early learning. nytimes.com/2021/05/07/opini…

Let’s be clear: Republicans are making it harder to vote because they are afraid to face the voters—and because they’re trying to push dangerous lies about the 2020 election results. We’ve got to pass the #ForThePeople Act to protect the right to vote. miamiherald.com/news/politic…

The Constitution doesn’t say anything about it taking a super-majority of 60 senators to pass a bill. It’s time to get rid of the filibuster so Mitch McConnell doesn’t get a veto over the will of the people. talkingpointsmemo.com/news/h…

The American Rescue Plan was deeply bipartisan. It was supported by Democrats, independents, and Republicans across this nation. The one group that was out of step were Republican elected officials in Washington—but now they’re trying to snag some credit. apnews.com/article/personal-…

.@MelanieforNM has spent her career tackling climate change, and as a state legislator, she’s put forward bold policy to bring good-paying jobs to New Mexico. I’m endorsing her for Congress in New Mexico’s First District so she can keep up the fight for working families.
Team Melanie, I'm excited to announce that our campaign has earned the endorsement of @ewarren! In Congress, I'll work alongside Senator Warren and my other colleagues to ensure that all New Mexicans have the resources and support they need to thrive. #nmpol

In April 2020, I asked a group of nurses what they needed to be able to do their jobs. I heard the same answer over and over again: child care. Arranging child care had always been stressful, but now it was so much harder—exactly when we needed them on the job.

If nurses and other essential workers can’t go to work, our whole country is at risk. If parents can’t do their jobs, they can’t make ends meet or build some security. As a country, we need to invest in quality, affordable child care. And I’ve got a plan for that.

My plan includes a pay raise for every child care worker and preschool teacher in America—disproportionately Latina and Black women, almost all working for barely above poverty-level wages. Paying these caregivers more would make it possible for them to build some security, too.

Facebook profits off of disinformation. That was true when Donald Trump was allowed on the platform, and it’s still true today. He should be banned for good, but that won’t solve the larger problem. We still need to rein in disinformation and protect our democracy.
