As Uber and WeWork demonstrate, much industrial development in the U.S. isn't shaped by market competition, but by small groups of experts picking winners and losers. The question isn't whether parts of our economy will be planned, but which, and by who. nymag.com/intelligencer/2020…

Before the Biden administration overreacts to the jobs and CPI numbers, they should consider that millions of hot takes rest on them not doing so. Please, if nothing else, think of the posters

This seems right in a sense. But feel like the main reason not to (project) panic is that we live under institutions that respond to such panic by engineering higher unemployment instead of resolving supply-side bottlenecks through public investment.
Bad reason not to panic about inflation: "A third of it is used cars". Cars are a major consumer durable; exactly the kind of thing whose price should be part of core inflation. Good reason not to panic about inflation: It's just a month of data, folks. Wait a few months.

I'm still a fan of framing the infrastructure bill in terms of lowering long-run cost of living for most Americans thru more investment (tangible & intangible) Income effect of more infra spending can be short-run inflationary, but capital formation is ultimately disinflationary
True that transfers and low interest rates have helped to support demand for used autos and pushed up prices. Solution is not fewer transfers or higher interest rates, but expanding capacity and better capacity preservation (autos currently constrained by low-end chip shortage)

👀 via @daveweigel, ballots cast in 2020 that now would be tossed in Georgia under the new election law would wipe out Biden's margin of victory. washingtonpost.com/politics/…

clearly, we need to create a recession so that people are too poor to afford used cars
The price of used cars went up 10% in one month!

I am extremely concerned by the growing conflict in Israel and Palestine. Once again we are seeing how the irresponsible actions of government-allied right-wing extremists in Jerusalem can escalate quickly into devastating war.

candidates with economically progressive policies appeal less to conservative values. But framing a progressive economic platform in terms of conservative values increases support among conservatives & moderates scholar.google.com/scholar_u…

Jews have spent most of our history being driven from one home after another. Now we're split between those who believe it's our responsibility to stand against that kind of evil, and those who think it's our turn to do the evicting.

israel killed twenty-eight palestinian civilians, including nine children, in response to two israeli deaths. they are likely to murder hundreds more over the next few days as they indsicriminately drop bombs into a region about half the density of NYC.
I've been accused of ignoring Israel's "role" in the current violence. Let me be crystal clear. No matter what you may think about the Sheikh Jarrah case, the police response to violent rioters, or anything else NOTHING👏JUSTIFIES👏FIRING👏ROCKETS👏AT👏INNOCENT👏CIVILIANS👏

one thing about israeli defenses of israeli behavior is that they have kept with the "double standard" framing even as israel's behavior descends into utter madness which would not be accepted from any state on earth
This has gone unreported. The Palestinian families in #SheikhJarrah don’t have proof of ownership. Even so, they were given the chance to register for protected tenancy, meaning they would not be evicted if they paid rent to the Jewish title holders. The families refused.
